Discovering your purpose in life makes life worth living!
Our ultimate common purpose is loving and worshiping God and loving and serving our fellow man.
And as Christians, we are all called to fulfill The Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20:
“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
While we have these purposes in common, we also have unique things we are called and equipped for.
According to 1 Corinthians 12:12-19, we all have a unique purpose.
12 For as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body—so also is Christ.
13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
14 So the body is not one part but many.
15 If the foot should say, “Because I’m not a hand, I don’t belong to the body,” in spite of this it still belongs to the body.
16 And if the ear should say, “Because I’m not an eye, I don’t belong to the body,” in spite of this it still belongs to the body.
17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?
18 But now God has placed each one of the parts in one body just as He wanted.
19 And if they were all the same part, where would the body be?
I once heard functioning as individuals within the body of Christ described as “Shaking What Ya Mama Gave Ya”.
In other words, just being yourself and doing what you do best.
This concept applies to all areas of life, and as Christians, we should be using everything we have been blessed with to serve and honor God.
We all have different personalities, gifts, abilities and ways of doing things, but in the end, if we’re each doing what we are put on earth to do, it comes together to bring something beautiful to a lost and dying world.
What are your spiritual gifts? If you don’t already know, consider taking this survey to find your spiritual gifts!
What are your talents? These are the things you are born with… The things that you are just naturally good at. Can you sing? The sing! Can you teach! Then teach!
The possibilities are limitless! Explore your gifts and talents and then put them to use!
The really cool thing about all this is that you probably have a lot of things you are good at that you may not even know about yet! Get out of your comfort zone and ask God to show you what you could be in Him!
Discovering your full potential is a process that should continue over the course of a lifetime!
What are your skills and abilities?
These are things you may have been born with a knack for, but not necessarily. Maybe you became good at through learning, hard work and practice.
Life experiences prepare us for kingdom work. Use what you know how to do for the Lord!
What is your personality like?
We all have different personalities, and each lends itself to different areas of need. Are you funny? Reserved? Even bossy personalities have a place!
Your personality makes you unique and equips you to build relationships with people who only you may be able to reach! Just another reason we are all different.
It’s also another reason that we should be tolerant of personalities much different from our own.
It takes all kinds!
What are your passions?
Do you have a heart for the broken?
Do you love numbers?
Think of ways you can use these passions to serve the Lord.
There are places of service for you!
I know some really creative ladies who teach a Bible journaling class. This is a great way to honor God’s Word and experience Him in a new way! The class itself is also a time of fellowship.
God knew you before you were ever even born! He created you for a purpose!
Psalm 139:13-14 (HCSB)
13 For it was You who created my inward parts;
You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I will praise You
because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made.
Your works are wonderful,
and I know this very well.
So, find what you were meant to do, and do it! Shake what ya Mama gave ya!
