Strawberry Shortcakes: A Yummy Summer Treat!

Strawberry shortcakes…what a yummy summer treat!

I know I have said it before in other food posts, but this dessert really takes me back to visits with my grandmother.

My Momaw always had good stuff to eat at her house. Even on week days! My mom worked, so we caught the bus at my grandmother’s, and got off the bus there after school too.

She always had something good for breakfast and for after-school snacks. (More on those breakfasts here.)

Some nights we even ate supper with her, and during the summer, I loved to spend the night there. We always lived nearby, and when I was 9, my parents built a house next door to my grandparents, and we were always very close.

I treasure the memories of the good times and the good food. I have a lot of her things too.

The sugar canister in the recipe photo and the teal and white checked table cloth above were hers. I think it would make her smile if she knew I still use them.

This strawberry dessert is something she served often from the time she could find ripe strawberries until fall.

It’s almost too simple to be called a recipe, so I’m just sharing a combination of store bought ingredients that make a delicious dessert.

Strawberry Shortcakes

Simple strawberry goodness.

  • 1 Carton Fresh Strawberries
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1 Package Dessert Cups
  • Redi-Whip

  1. Cut the ends off strawberries and slice them.

  2. Pour sugar over the top and let it sit until strawberries reduce and begin to form a syrup.

  3. Stir sugar and strawberries and let it sit for an hour. (Refrigerate unless you are eating it right away.)

  4. Add strawberries to dessert cup and top with Red-Whip.

We had this for dessert last weekend, following our first cook-out of the summer, and it was a good feeling to continue the family tradition of strawberry shortcakes.

Just one of those little things that aren’t really important… except in my heart.

I will never eat strawberry shortcakes without thinking of my grandmother, even as my family enjoys them now.

Hope your family will like them too!
