Life is tough.
As women, we have way too much on our plates.
Some things we take upon ourselves, but so much of what we have to do is unavoidable.
It’s important to take care of yourself when life threatens to overwhelm.
Right now, I have a lot going on. Bet you do, too!
I’m a counselor in an elementary school, and by the end of the school year, I am ready to wind down. But, there’s still a lot to get done before the last day.
Add in the blog and the boutique business, and all the day-to-day tasks that go into housekeeping and there just don’t seem to be enough hours in the day.
That said, my “housekeeping” at this point consists of dishes, laundry and just in general staying a couple of steps ahead of the health department. It’s bad.
Hopefully I can get things looking good again once school is out for the summer!
Until then, I’m just keeping my head above water.
At times like this, I know I need to step back a little, or I will become even less productive in the long run.
The following are some things you can do to take care of yourself during the hectic seasons of life.
Take Care Of Yourself By Making Time For Down-Time
Making time for down-time can be challenging, but we all need time to relax and re-charge.
For me, down-time doesn’t necessarily mean that I am doing nothing.
But it does mean that whatever I have to do, I can do it at home.
A Saturday when I can just stay home is a treat.
I might do some laundry or even some light cleaning, but if I can get in some couch time, reading a good book or watching a movie, it’s still a good day.
I like those kinds of days where I don’t have to get ready to go anywhere. Days when there’s no need to do hair or make-up, and I can do housework in my night-clothes. (Proper undergarments not required!)
A day when the pressures of social interaction are removed, and I can just hang out and be myself without worrying what anybody else might think. (Not that I care overly much about what anybody thinks any other time! LOL! I am just me.)
That is the ideal day for me at the end of a long week!
Down time is good for us, but to be able to have it, we sometimes have to say “no” to some things.
Take Care Of Yourself By Just Saying No
Sometimes you just have to say no to some activities…even good ones. There are times when there are things I would really like to do. Or feel like I need to do. At least in theory. But I know that if I want to keep going with the things I have to do, I need to make some choices.
Maybe it’s just me, but without down-time, I start to shut down.
I also become resentful of extra activities, and sometimes even the essential ones.
I get to the point that I don’t want to do anything!
This is not a good place to be, so to avoid getting to this point, I have to just say “no” sometimes.
Even to myself.
And in addition to having some down time and saying no, sometimes we all need a little pampering!
Take Care Of Yourself By Pampering
You spend a lot of time and energy taking care of everyone else, so what about yourself?You could use a little pampering!
Something as simple as a bubble bath can be incredibly relaxing.
When you get out, get you some good smelling lotion and rub it all over! Feels so good!
And I guess this is pitiful, but sometimes, even just a leisurely shower, with no 7:00 a.m. start time for work looming ahead is a treat!
At the end of a long day, soak your feet in some very warm water with epsom salt. Your feet will be softer and you will be more relaxed.
You might even want to paint your toenails!
These are only a couple of suggestions. What are some ways you like to pamper yourself?
Anything you do that helps you feel good is great for when you start feeling tired or overwhelmed.
It really doesn’t matter how you choose to take care of yourself when life threatens to overwhelm. As long as you do take care of yourself.
At these times, take care of the things that can’t wait, and let the little things go.
Most of what you think has to be done today will still be there waiting for you when you get around to it!
